Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies (BHHC) P&C Portal workflows

Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies (BHHC) is one of Berkshire Hathaway’s insurance companies. They offer commercial auto and commercial property coverage.

The problem

The P&C (property and casualty) Portal was outdated and difficult to navigate through. Another designer on our team created the initial screens but was put on another project before making workflows and responsive designs. As the new lead for this product’s design, I needed to deep dive into how the product would work, determine if we were solving the users’ problems, and make sure the file was dev-ready.

The process

After doing a product overview with the initial designer and being co-pilot in a few stakeholder meetings, I used the navigation to start a site map to determine if we had all the pages and links. Once gaps were identified I met with marketing and product stakeholders to refine the list and confirm what was needed, definition of done, and what items were in future releases.

Now having a list of needs, I created stories on our Product Design DevOps board to account for the work to be done. Getting back into the file, I cleaned up and organized the pages by the product’s navigation, linked to design system components, and kept some local components.

The solution

The final design file grew from one page with 20 screens to 12 pages with a couple hundred screens. Because most of the developers on the team are full stack and not front-end focused, they preferred workflows with breakpoints. These new workflows and screens are responsive and show the functionality of interactable items that combine multiple components. They have annotations about behaviors and links, and the final design is based off a 16px grid. This product is still in development but we are already having great feedback from the current portal SMEs and stakeholders.
